In the Odessa region of Ukraine, a unique tradition continues to live on thanks to the efforts of talented craftswoman Ganna Konstantinova. The Black Sea clay toy she creates is part of the rich intangible cultural heritage of the region, presented in the series of publications "Regional Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Odessa Region" by the Odessa Regional Center for Ukrainian Culture.
This initiative aims to promote and preserve the unique cultural wealth of the region while affirming the national identity of the Ukrainian people. In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, preserving this heritage takes on even greater significance as a symbol of the nation's resilience and cultural diversity.
Ganna Konstantinova - Guardian of Bulgarian Traditions
Ganna Konstantinova is not just a clay toy maker, but a true guardian of Bulgarian traditions in Ukraine. As a descendant of Bessarabian Bulgarians who settled in the region more than two centuries ago, she carries within her the richness of her ancestors. Living in the Bulgarian village of Gorodne, Konstantinova has become a central figure in preserving and passing on Bulgarian culture to future generations.
Her self-taught path in the art of pottery has led to the creation of unique ceramic toys and decorative pumpkins that tell the story of her people. In her works, curly-haired sheep, festive ritual breads, Easter baskets, and scenes with young people in traditional dance come to life - all living testimonies to the rich Bulgarian culture in Ukraine.
Museum Activities and Cultural Heritage
The Gorodne Museum has become the center of her activities, where, together with her daughter Maya - the museum's director - she conducts tours, masterclasses in clay modeling, the traditional game "Ashik", folk singing, and the re-enactment of ritual ceremonies. These activities not only preserve traditions but also make them accessible and attractive to the younger generation.
Ganna Konstantinova's artistry has gained recognition far beyond Ukraine's borders. She has participated in exhibitions and festivals in Moldova, Poland, Turkey, and Bulgaria, winning numerous awards. In 2025, she was honored with the prestigious regional award "Rostyslav Paletsky" in the category of "Decorative and Folk Art" for her collection of clay toys and decorative pumpkins.
Contribution to Cultural Heritage
Besides her creative activities, Konstantinova actively participates in preserving cultural heritage on a broader level. She has contributed to the preparation of elements for the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine and has participated in creating the guide "Traditional Christmas of Odessa Region".
Ganna Konstantinova's family is a true treasure trove of Bulgarian culture in Ukraine. They collect antique objects, Bulgarian folk costumes, and a unique collection of kerchiefs from the peoples of Bessarabia, contributing to the preservation of the region's tangible cultural heritage.
Significance in the Context of Modern Ukraine
In these difficult times for Ukraine, the work of Ganna Konstantinova and her family takes on even greater significance. Preserving the intangible cultural heritage of the Odessa region becomes not only a way to maintain cultural diversity but also a symbol of the resilience and unity of the Ukrainian nation in the face of challenges.
