Orthodox August: A Spiritual Journey to the Dormition of the Theotokos

The traditional Dormition Fast starts from August 1 to 14, offering believers a period of abstinence, prayer, and inner purification before a significant Christian holiday.

The Orthodox community enters one of the four significant multi-day fasts, which will last two weeks – from the beginning to the middle of August. The period is characterized by deep spiritual experience and preparation for the Assumption of the Virgin holiday.

Worship practices include strict dietary restrictions: believers abstain from meat, dairy, and egg products. Vegetable foods prepared with oil, various bean dishes, and fruits are allowed. An exception is the Transfiguration of Christ on August 6, when fish consumption is permitted.

Special evening services – Theotokos Paraklesis and water blessing – will be held in Orthodox temples. These rituals aim to spiritually purify and prepare believers for the upcoming major Christian holiday.
