The leading spiritual figure of Bulgaria – His Holiness Patriarch Daniel – made an official proposal regarding the status of one of the most important Orthodox holidays. In a public statement on August 1, 2025, he launched the idea that the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God should acquire an official state character.
The Patriarch substantiated his position with the deep spiritual tradition and the unifying potential of the holiday. Neighboring countries Greece and Romania, where this day is already celebrated as a national holiday, were cited as a specific example.
The current situation in Bulgaria shows that despite its significance, the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God is missing from the state holiday calendar. The patriarch's initiative aims not only at official recognition but also at reviving traditional national and religious values.
The proposal immediately sparked a wide public response, receiving support among believers and spiritual circles. The discussion is yet to come, but the first step towards a possible change has already been made.
