Non-working days around the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria

The Council of Ministers made a decision that reflects significant changes to the country_q_s calendar. At a government meeting, it was announced that December 31, 2025 and January 2, 2026, will be non-working days, announced Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova. This decision, as explained by the minister, is directly related to the upcoming introduction of the euro in the country.

The reason for these non-working days is the need to carry out large-scale technological changes. These changes are of key importance to the financial and non-financial sector and are related to the preparation for the introduction of the single European currency from January 1, 2026. According to the announcement, these efforts are critical for the successful transition to the euro.

The proposal to designate non-working days was subject to public discussion in early October. The purpose of these days is to provide sufficient time for technical preparation and adaptation of systems in the financial and non-financial sector. The report accompanying the proposal emphasized that these measures are essential to minimize operational risks and to ensure the smooth running of the process of transitioning to the euro.
