In 2026, the National Academy of Art (NAA) celebrates its 130th anniversary. The anniversary celebrations are held under the official patronage of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria. Part of the program is the documentary exhibition "A Photographic Journey Through Time," which is set up on the alley next to the "Sea Casino" Cultural Center in the city of Burgas and will be open to visitors from September 1 to September 30, 2026.

The grand opening of the exhibition is scheduled for September 1 (Tuesday), 2026, at 5:30 p.m. The project aims to trace the development of the institution from its founding in 1896 to the present day through the power of photography as a historical document. The visual narrative presents the life of the first higher art school in Bulgaria by showcasing faculty, students, the building facilities, and the spirit of different historical eras.

The content of the exhibition includes valuable shots from several specialized archives: those of the National Academy of Art, the State Archives Agency, the Bulgarian Historical Archive at the "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" National Library, as well as the Old Sofia archive. The realization of this initiative was made possible thanks to the Competition for Funding Projects for Inherent Scientific and Artistic-Creative Activity at the NAA for 2026.

The creation of the academy played a fateful role in Bulgarian artistic life at the end of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century. It not only established the professional and public authority of the Bulgarian artist but also laid the foundations of our national culture after the Liberation. Today, the NAA remains a leading cultural factor, combining educational programs, international activities, and exhibitions to reinforce its status as a modern higher education institution that preserves traditions and stimulates contemporary creative practices.
