On November 6, 2025, an exhibition opens its doors at the Archaeological Exposition of RIM – Burgas, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the remarkable archaeological research of the Burgas museum. The occasion is the discovery of a rich tomb belonging to an aristocrat in the necropolis of Anchialos.
The exhibition promises to offer a rare glimpse into the past, presenting artifacts that illuminate the lives of the former inhabitants of this land. Among the finds that will be exhibited, the large group of cult objects stands out. These artifacts testify to the religious role that the noblewoman, who is thought to have been named Leseskepra, played during her lifetime.
The gold jewelry found in the tomb will be among the highlights of the exhibition. These works of art represent the pinnacle of jewelry craftsmanship in ancient Thrace during the transition from late Hellenism to the early Roman Empire. They not only reflect the wealth of the buried aristocrat, but also provide valuable information about the cultural influences and aesthetic preferences of the era.
The guest of the event will be Dr. Anton Karabashev, director of IM-Pomorie. He will present a lecture with a presentation dedicated to "The state of archaeological research in the necropolis of ancient Anchialos".
In recent years, new archaeological discoveries have deepened our knowledge of Ulpia Anchialos, present-day Pomorie, as a significant economic and cultural center during the Roman and Late Antique periods. These discoveries have enriched the history and material culture of the city and its region with previously unknown facts.
The studies in the necropolis of the ancient city, both from excavations and from accidental finds, provide rich material and information on the burial structures, burial practices, the rituals associated with them, and the funerary gifts. Besides flat graves, mound graves are also found in the necropolis of Anchialos, but they are less common.
Undoubtedly the most remarkable monument in the area of the necropolis of Anchialos is the Antique domed tomb - heroon. It is one of the largest in Bulgaria and specialists date it between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD. Its architecture combines Thracian funeral traditions with Roman cult construction.
The presentation will examine the main results of the studies carried out over the years in the necropolis of Anchialos. The lecturer will focus on issues related to historical topography, the characteristics of the necropolis, the chronology of the monument, the funeral rite, and the material and spiritual culture of the inhabitants of the ancient city.
