From 1 to 31 October, the "Morsko Casino" cultural centre in Burgas will host "The Colour of Salt", an exhibition by photographer Niki Dinov. It shows the Burgas salt pans at sunset and from above. The opening is on 1 October at 6:30pm.

The exhibition has 24 photos, printed on panels measuring 127 by 94cm.

Niki Dinov has been taking photos since 1984. He set up the photo print shop Esstetic Print, where pictures from phones and computers are printed and can be hung on a wall at home or in the office.

The photographer says that in recent years he has mostly worked on commissions and rarely has time for his own projects. The idea for the exhibition came to him in August, when he decided to visit the salt pans, a 15-minute drive from his home. "The place grabbed me from the first visit, and I started going there every day or two at sunset. Each time I saw something different and wanted more: colours, textures, shapes, flamingos... That's how the idea for this exhibition was born," Dinov says.

The red and pink shades of the water seen in the photos have a natural explanation. The microalga Dunaliella salina grows in the highly salty water and releases red pigments to protect itself from the strong sun. Tiny brine shrimp feed on it, and flamingos feed on the shrimp — their pink feathers come straight from this food chain.

"With the photos in this exhibition, I want to show you this place the way I saw it, because it's far more beautiful and mysterious than we think when we pass by it every day," the photographer adds.

The exhibition is supported by Burgas Municipality and the Rotary Club Burgas.
