Burgas Celebrates Black Sea Day with Research and Events

On October 31st, when we celebrate International Black Sea Day, the city of Burgas will participate in a significant initiative, promising an unforgettable experience. The organizers have prepared an attractive event, which will offer participants a rich program, focused on the protection and research of our sea.

On Friday, the ship "Anastasia" will set sail at exactly 10:00 AM from Magazia 1, leading on board all those wishing to learn more about the secrets of the Black Sea. A lecture is planned to highlight important aspects of the ecology and history of this important water area.

After that, upon disembarkation on the island, participants will have the opportunity to engage in practical work, which will give them a clearer understanding of the changes taking place in the sea. Measurements will be taken of the receding of the sea water over the last five years, with the discussion focusing on the possible causes of this phenomenon. In addition, a count of plastic in one square decimeter of seagrass, a vital habitat for many marine organisms, will be conducted. The discoveries promise to be important for understanding pollution in the Black Sea. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the diversity of fish species inhabiting the sea, as well as the specifics of fishing during the autumn months. The topics of dolphins, which often inhabit the waters, will also be discussed.

At 13:30, again on October 31st, the catamaran "Anastasia" will turn into a real research vessel. In cooperation with the scientific community of Burgas, represented by Burgas Free University and Burgas State University "Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov", passengers will have the opportunity to watch in real time a dive to the Underwater Park "St. Anastasia" with a special drone. Divers from the SNHC "Friends of the Sea" - Burgas will also participate in the event.

The drone that will be used was presented at the "Black Sea 2030" Forum, held a week ago. This forum brought together institutions and organizations from the country and abroad that have a direct relationship with our gateway to the world.

For 30 minutes, on a television screen in the ship's salon, viewers, sipping herbal tea, will be able to observe the life that has sprung up around the chapel and the statue in the waters of the island. An examination of the changes caused by a recent storm and inflicted on the cars submerged in the sea will be carried out, in order to understand the enormous power of the sea.

After the exciting experience, the ship will dock for an hour on the island "St. Anastasia", providing participants with the opportunity to enjoy the peace and quiet of this unique place.

Scientists from the Burgas universities will take samples of sea water to examine its salinity and composition. This will be repeated after eight months, at the opening of the summer tourist season, as well as on 31.10.2026. These regular studies will provide valuable information on the state of the sea.

The initiators call on everyone to join the celebration on October 31st, turning the island into a research center dedicated to the health of the Black Sea. This is an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the state of the sea and to engage in its protection.
