We celebrate 148 years since the Liberation of Bulgaria. Events for the national holiday will take place throughout the country.
The date of the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano - March 3rd, was declared a national holiday of Bulgaria by a decision of the State Council on February 27, 1990, and of the National Assembly on March 5 of the same year, and is celebrated as the Day of the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule, according to information from the "Reference" department of BTA.
The Day of the Liberation of Bulgaria was first celebrated on February 19, 1880. After the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in Bulgaria in 1916, the holiday was celebrated for the first time in the new style on March 3, 1917, and was celebrated as an official holiday until October 1951, when it was abolished by the Labor Code. The day was celebrated once as an official holiday in 1978 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. The celebration of March 3rd was restored in 1987, and until 1989 the day was celebrated as an official holiday by a decision of the July plenum of 1987 of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party and the Council of Ministers.
This year, the Municipality of Kazanlak is hosting the official celebration of the Third of March on Shipka Peak. Among the highlights of the festive program is the participation of the "Bulgare" ensemble, led by Hristo Dimitrov. In view of the expected large number of visitors and the need to ensure the safe and organized conduct of the festivities, a temporary organization of traffic will also be introduced.
The capital marks the national holiday of Bulgaria with a series of solemn events in the city center. President Iliana Yotova, acting Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov and the Speaker of the National Assembly Raya Nazaryan will participate in the celebrations. At 11:00 am in front of the Unknown Soldier monument, the ceremony of raising the national flag begins with the participation of formations from the National Guard. From 12:00 noon, the solemn changing of the guard takes place in front of the Presidential building. From 6:30 pm on "National Assembly" square, the solemn evening service will begin.
