The environmental organization WWF Bulgaria is undertaking an unprecedented strategy for preserving the brown bear (Ursus arctos) in the Western Rhodopes. Experts are developing an innovative approach to improve the natural habitat of the endangered species.

By the end of July 2025, a large-scale project will start to build compost-assistance zones in strategic forest corridors. The main goal of the initiative is to counteract the reduction of natural food sources caused by climate change and prolonged droughts.

Specially created micro-habitats are designed to attract various insects that serve as an additional food source for bears. Through this intervention, the aim is to reduce the risk of animals entering nearby settlements in search of food.

The scientific team has installed high-tech observation cameras that will allow a detailed analysis of bear behavior and their interaction with the new compost zones. In parallel with the field work, information campaigns are being conducted among local communities and hunters.

The project represents a comprehensive approach to preserving biodiversity, combining scientific research, ecological innovations, and social engagement to achieve a long-term positive effect.
