Preparation for the fire hazard season in Burgas
From March 15 to October 31, the Burgas region is in a state of high readiness to combat forest and field fires. At a briefing held at the District Administration, it was made clear that the institutions have brought their structures to full readiness following extensive inspections throughout the year.
"The cause of the fires is almost 100 percent human activity, human negligence, and human irresponsibility," stated Stanimir Sotirov from the South-East State Enterprise.
Climate change and the scale of fires
- An increase in temperatures in the Strandzha and Sakar regions by nearly 3 degrees over the last decades.
- In 2025, fires in the forest territories of the region destroyed over 21,000 decares.
- The Burgas region covers 7% of the country's territory, which makes logistics during firefighting extremely difficult.
Prevention measures and new resources
To reduce the risk, authorities are focusing on:
- Maintenance of 264 km of firebreaks.
- New equipment and pickup trucks for the municipalities of Sredets, Ruen, and Burgas under a European project worth 457,000 euros.
- Expansion of volunteer groups, with an appeal made to the residents of Primorsko to join the campaign.
The police in Burgas are also actively involved in the process, providing logistical support, evacuation when needed, and traffic control for emergency vehicles.
