The decision of the Council of Ministers last week to grant a part of the island of "Sts. Kirik and Julita" for management by the State Enterprise "Port Infrastructure" has caused tension in Sozopol. Mayor Tihomir Yanakiev expressed dissatisfaction, as the measure was taken without public discussion and lacks a public concept.
According to Yanakiev, there is a lack of clarity regarding the strategy, the management method, and the financing of the future project. He stated that he has not seen a concept from the Council of Ministers or SEPI. The mayor emphasized that the decision was made "literally at the eleventh hour" by a caretaker government, without clearly defined motives.
Yanakiev expressed doubts that the project is primarily driven by economic and private interests, pointing out that "personal interests are apparent." He expressed concerns about excessive commercialization and raised questions about the benefits for the local community.
The mayor insists that the project should be subjected to a wide public discussion and that a clear concept for the development of the emblematic place should be presented.
