Over 6000 participants from more than 60 countries will take part in the 42nd edition of Wizz Air Sofia Marathon 2025, which will be held on October 11 and 12 in the Bulgarian capital. The largest athletic event in the country will unite professional athletes and running enthusiasts who will compete in distances of 5 km (mass start), 10 km, half marathon of 21.1 km, and classic marathon with a length of 42.195 km.
The organizers and main sponsor Wizz Air announced that this year's edition will offer a richer program than ever, covering two days with multiple competitive events, cultural activities, and surprises for both runners and spectators.
The marathon route is specially selected to showcase the most beautiful parts of Sofia. The start and finish will be in front of the National Art Gallery at Alexander First Square, and the route will pass by key landmarks such as the National Assembly, Largo, Vasil Levski Boulevard, Alabin Street, and the St. Alexander Nevsky Memorial Church.
All successfully finished runners will receive a medal, and there is a prize fund for the main distances. Winners and top performers will be financially rewarded – from 500 leva for tenth place to 6000 leva for first place in the classic marathon. Additionally, as part of the WIZZ Run Series initiative, participants can collect points for each participation in various European marathons of the airline (1 km = 1 point). The best men and women by points will win four All You Can Fly subscriptions for a one-year stage. The second-placed will receive vouchers of 1000 euros, and the third-placed – vouchers worth 800 euros.
"Wizz Air Sofia Marathon is more than a competition – it is a festival where thousands of athletes from around the world turn Sofia's streets into a stage of endurance and cultural diversity. For us, supporting the event is a way to unite people who share values such as a healthy lifestyle and sustainable mobility. We are proud to stand behind an initiative aimed at both personal achievements and a cleaner, more active Europe," commented Anastasia Novak, Corporate Sustainability and Communications Manager at Wizz Air.
