Hurricane-force winds and destruction in Skopje
Severe weather conditions have hit the capital of North Macedonia, as hurricane-force winds and torrential rain caused extensive damage. Social media was flooded with footage showing torn-off roofs, fallen traffic lights, and broken trees.
"Together with the Crisis Management Headquarters, we are on the ground; all available resources are in action to protect the citizens," stated Mayor Orce Georgievski.
Main damage caused by the storm:
- A cross toppled at the "Saint John the Baptist" church in the Butel neighborhood.
- A 60-meter flagpole collapsed in front of a large shopping center.
- Damaged roof structure at the "Vlado Tasevski" school.
- Over 1,000 calls to the 112 emergency line.
Damage has also been reported in Kumanovo, Dojran, and Strumica, where the bad weather continues to cause disruptions. Local authorities are urging the population to exercise increased caution and follow official guidelines.
