A 33-year-old driver from Provadia will sue the Road Infrastructure Agency (API) after crashing on the Provadia-Aitos national road. The stretch has been under repair for months, and the man says the broken road surface caused the crash.

"I don't intend to leave it at that, because I'm not the first person to crash on this section," he told BNT.

The man drives a van and was heading home from work, from Dalgopol to Provadia. Just before the turn-off for the village of Tutrakantsi, the van left the road and ended up in a ditch. Thick fog and slush on the road limited visibility.

After the impact, the driver felt pain in his chest and head. A lorry driver helped him out of the van. Ambulance crews and police came to the scene. His alcohol and drug tests were negative.

He was taken to the emergency centre in Varna for tests. That evening he was sent home to recover.

The driver says he was going at up to 55 km/h because the road does not allow more, and he thinks he hit a rock. He says the stretch had no restrictions and no signs warning of repairs, and he believes traffic there should be stopped.

The section from Provadia to the villages of Hrabrovo and Komarevo is under repair. The man is well and back on his feet, but he worries about the next victim. "It happened to me today, tomorrow it could happen to children, to schoolchildren, to a school bus," he told BNT.

API did not answer questions about when the repairs will end and what safety measures are in place on the stretch.

The repairs were ordered at the end of last year without secured funding, regional minister Ivan Shishkov told BNT. He promised the work would be finished by the end of this year or the start of next year.
