Three people died when a large "fairy chimney" collapsed near the entrance to the Göreme Open Air Museum in Turkey's Cappadocia region. Others were injured, local officials said. It happened at about 3pm on 29 October, after heavy rain.
Rock pieces weighing several tons fell on a spot where people were at the time. Local officials say a landslide after the heavy rain caused it.
Rescuers first found two bodies. Nevşehir governor Hüseyin Kök later said a third body had been found under the rubble. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, where they are being treated. The first official statements did not name the injured or give the nationality of the dead.
Many teams from the police, the gendarmerie, the health services and Turkey's disaster and emergency agency are at the scene. Rescuers are searching the rubble and checking whether anyone else is trapped.
The car park next to the site was cleared. About 150 cars were parked there when the rocks fell. Access to the danger zone is restricted because of the risk of another collapse.
A TV reporter at the scene said the area where the rocks fell is not a place for walks, so few people were there, even though it is close to the museum.
Minister Gürlek said three prosecutors have been assigned to the case and it will be investigated from every angle. Security in the area has been raised to the highest level. Officials are also checking for possible risks at other historic and tourist sites in Cappadocia.
Cappadocia is a symbol of Turkish tourism and a World Heritage site. The Göreme Open Air Museum is one of the most visited places in Turkey. Ancient rock churches, monastery complexes and cave homes lie around it.
The tall rocks of volcanic origin, known as "fairy chimneys", were shaped by erosion over millions of years. They draw tourists from around the world. The ancient underground city of Derinkuyu, which has 18 levels and reaches a depth of 85 metres, also lies under the region.
Cappadocia has seen deadly accidents involving tourists before. In 2017, a hot air balloon crashed near Nevşehir, killing one person and injuring 20.
