The dramatic rescue of a rare honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) was carried out on August 4, 2025, by wildlife professionals. The incident took place near the village of Madrentsi, where a devastating forest fire threatened the local ecosystem.

The specialized Wildlife Rescue Centre of the Green Balkans conservation organization from Stara Zagora took immediate action. Together with experts from the Sofia Regional Directorate and representatives of WWF Bulgaria, they managed to extract the fragile bird from the flames.

In addition to the honey buzzard, the rescue team managed to evacuate two more animals - a turtle and a long-eared owl. Unfortunately, hundreds of wild forest inhabitants did not survive the catastrophic fire.

The center took care of the rescued animals, providing them with the necessary veterinary assistance and preparation for returning to their natural habitat. This incident once again highlights the critical role of quick and professional intervention during natural disasters.
