Minister Genov Orders Investigation After Disaster on the Black Sea Coast
Sofia – The Minister of Environment and Water, Manol Genov, has ordered an investigation of the "Black Sea Region" Basin Directorate after torrential rains caused a crisis situation on the Black Sea coast. The decision was announced at a briefing in the Council of Ministers. The purpose of the investigation is to determine whether the investment intentions implemented in the area of the so-called dry gully were coordinated with the competent authorities. Minister Genov stressed that the term "dry gully" does not exist officially.
The tragic consequences of the disaster include a death in the resort village of Elenite. The Deputy Minister of Interior, Tony Todorov, informed that actions are being taken to recover the body of the deceased person.
There are no meteorological stations in the Elenite area, which makes it difficult to monitor the meteorological situation in detail. According to information provided by neighboring stations, the intense rainfall caused a gully to flood. Minister Genov explained that there is no river in the area, but there are several so-called dry gullies. He added that an extremely intense rain fell in a short period of time. The estimated amount of rainfall is between 200 and 250 liters per square meter, according to data from neighboring hydrometeorological stations. At the place where the tragedy occurred, the tension was felt in the air. The people who gathered seemed shocked by what happened. Police officers were trying to calm those present.
