Citizens gathered at a protest demonstration to honor the memory of road traffic victims, expressing their anger and sorrow against the rising number of fatalities on the roads. The event took place in the capital, at the site where a car recently crashed into a public transport bus—at the busy intersection between "Vazkresenie" Blvd. and "Konstantin Velichkov" Blvd. With a minute of silence and a deep bow, those present paid tribute to all those whose lives were senselessly taken.
Organizers and Messages
The initiative was organized by the "Angels of the Road" Association, which fights for increased road safety and justice for victims. Protest participants, many of whom have lost loved ones, carried photos of their relatives and friends who died in road accidents. Their faces, immortalized in the photographs, served as a reminder of the human cost of reckless driving.
The demonstrators held up posters with strong messages that reflected public discontent. Slogans like "Boulevards are not racetracks" highlighted the problem of high speed and reckless behavior by drivers. Other posters carried messages such as "Your choice can take a life", a reminder of the personal responsibility of every driver. The poster with the slogan "Bulgaria does not have children to kill" had the strongest emotional impact, appealing for an end to the tragedies that take the lives of the most defenseless.
Calls for Change
Representatives of the association stated that the situation is intolerable. Petya Ivanova from "Angels of the Road" told the media: "The war on the roads shows absolute disregard, and something must change. It cannot go on like this." She added that the goal of the protest is to awaken society and make people reflect on the consequences of their behavior on the road. According to her, despite all the appeals and campaigns, accidents continue to happen with horrifying frequency.
Heartbreaking was also the story of Dencho Dimitrov, the brother of a person who died in a road accident. He addressed those present with a call for action, stating that "the war on the roads must stop." According to him, to achieve this, not only stronger public support is needed, but also significantly harsher and fairer justice. The demand for stricter penalties for those at fault is key for the people fighting for change.
- The protest showed that citizens are ready to raise their voice in the name of life and safety.
- The demonstration underscored the need for immediate measures to address the problem that takes innocent lives and leaves families in grief.
