Prosecutors have asked the State Agency for National Security (DANS) to carry out 84 checks on contracts to shore up national roads hit by landslides and other ground movements.
The checks follow documents sent by the Road Infrastructure Agency (API) itself. They list the contracts between API, the state-owned company Avtomagistrali and building firms. API says Avtomagistrali signed 129 contracts with outside contractors worth more than €209.6m (over €209.63m (410m leva)) before VAT.
DANS will check whether firms got around public procurement rules, how contractors were picked, whether work was passed on to subcontractors, and how advance payments were made.
For each site, the agency must find out what work was actually done, how far it has got, and how the money paid out was spent.
