The memory of the fallen police officers Atanas Gradev and Yordan Iliev will be honored in Burgas on the third anniversary of the tragic incident that took their lives. The event, organized by the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Burgas, will be held on August 28 to pay tribute to the two officers who died in the line of duty. The tragedy, which shocked the whole country, happened during an attempt to stop a bus with illegal migrants, which highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers on the borders and inside the country.
Memorial Event and Tournament in Memory of the Fallen
The memorial event will take place at 11:00 AM at the monument to the fallen police officers, erected at the "Trapezitsa" intersection in the seaside city. The location was not chosen by chance—it was there, on August 28, 2022, that the fatal scene unfolded. At that time, Gradev and Iliev, officers of the First Regional Department - Burgas, attempted to stop a bus carrying 47 illegal migrants. During the maneuver, the vehicle crashed into their patrol car, and the two police officers died on the spot. This tragic death left an indelible mark on the hearts of their colleagues and the entire community of Burgas.
Earlier that same day, at 10:00 AM, in front of the building of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the official start of the Republican Police Pistol Shooting Tournament will be given. This sports competition is also dedicated to the memory of Gradev and Iliev. It will be attended by officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs from all over the country, as well as representatives of other state institutions. The tournament will not only pay tribute to the heroes but also demonstrate the professional training and readiness of law enforcement agencies to protect the security of citizens.
The memorial plaque at the site of the incident, which will be the center of the commemoration, was erected two years ago entirely with donations from police officers. This gesture is a testament to the respect and solidarity within the ranks of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, reminding us that the sacrifice of Gradev and Iliev will not be forgotten. The events on August 28 in Burgas will be an occasion to reflect on the dangers accompanying the daily lives of police officers and to show gratitude for their selfless work.
