Burgas municipal councilors are proposing an allocation of 30,000 euros in the municipality's 2027 Budget for the purchase of new equipment for the Department of Forensic Medicine and Deontology at UMBAL-Burgas. The planned funds are intended for an electric lift or trolley, as well as a refrigerated morgue chamber for body storage.
The two existing refrigeration units are completely inadequate for the morgue's needs. The memorandum emphasizes that due to the increased flow of refugees and migrants, the bodies of unidentified persons sometimes must remain in the department for months or even years until relatives are found or they are released for official burial.
The department's workload is further increased by its monopoly in the region, as it is the only such facility in the province. Consequently, it receives bodies from other medical institutions whenever an autopsy is required. The department also conducts various expert examinations, forensic medical examinations, and autopsies as ordered by the prosecutor's office, the court, and pre-trial investigation authorities.
