Call for a Safer Environment
On the occasion of International Firefighters' Day, the National Trade Union of Firefighters and Rescuers (NSPRS) "Ogneborets" issued a sharp statement regarding working conditions in the system. The main focus is on ensuring the health and lives of employees who are exposed to dangers on a daily basis.
"For us, it is unacceptable that in 2026 in Bulgaria, there is a shortage of protective clothing," stated Eng. Ventsislav Stankov.
Main demands of the union:
- Provision of sufficient protective clothing that meets European standards.
- Introduction of strict decontamination after every incident to protect against toxic substances.
- Recognition of cancer as an occupational disease, following the guidelines of the World Health Organization.
- Expansion of programs for preventive screenings and early diagnosis.
European context and legislative changes
NSPRS "Ogneborets" actively supports the EPSU campaign for an amendment to Directive 2004/37/EC. The union addressed MEP Petar Volgin with an appeal to support the changes that will limit firefighters' exposure to carcinogens and mutagens while on duty. The Trade Union Federation of Employees in the Ministry of Interior also expressed support for these demands, insisting on modernization and adequate funding for the sector.
