A Key Project for Bulgaria's Energy Independence
The construction of Units 7 and 8 at the Kozloduy NPP is a strategic priority that will ensure the country's energy independence and reduce reliance on imported fuels. During a media briefing, "Kozloduy NPP – New Build", "Westinghouse", and "Hyundai E&C" presented the progress on the project.
"The project will add approximately 1% to the country's gross domestic product annually during the construction phase," stated Petyo Ivanov, Executive Director of "Kozloduy NPP – New Build".
Economic Effects and Future
- Long-term growth: 60 years of operation are expected, generating 55 billion euros in added value.
- Integration of local business: 36 memoranda of cooperation have already been signed with Bulgarian companies.
- Technology: Utilization of AP1000 reactors, a proven global safety technology.
When will the new capacities be operational?
According to Joel Eaker from "Westinghouse", the expected start date for the new units is 2037. Currently, studies and documentation necessary to secure bank financing are being finalized, and there is active engagement with the European Commission for approval of the investment plan.
