Bulgaria seeks to accelerate F-16 projects
The modernization of the Bulgarian Armed Forces is a priority that requires close cooperation with the USA. Minister of Defense Dimitar Stoyanov held a video conference call with US Assistant Secretary of Defense William J. Capeletti Jr. to discuss critical issues regarding the country's defense capabilities.
The main topic of the talks was the acceleration of the implementation of the contracts for the acquisition of F-16 Block 70 fighter jets.
Seeking alternatives for Air Policing
Minister Stoyanov emphasized the need for additional flight equipment to guarantee the security of our skies until the full commissioning of the new F-16s. Among the options discussed are:
- The possibility of acquiring "second-hand" F-16 fighter jets;
- Accelerating the delivery of the second eight aircraft from the Lockheed Martin portfolio;
- Continued use of the available MiG-29s until the new platform reaches operational readiness.
What's next?
Currently, the delivery of the second batch of aircraft is expected to be delayed until the second quarter of 2030. The American side confirmed its readiness to assist with joint projects in order to reduce the risk of an "unguarded window" for Bulgarian airspace.
