Preventive measures at Kozloduy NPP
The Ministry of Energy has announced that, starting today, Kozloduy NPP is reducing the power output of Unit 5 by approximately 120 MW. The decision was prompted by the critical drop in the Danube River water level and forecasts for continued drought.
This is the first time in the plant's 52-year history that such a measure has been necessary due to extreme hydrological conditions.
Why is the restriction necessary?
- Water from the Danube River is necessary for cooling the steam in the condensers (the non-nuclear part of the NPP).
- The plant's own pumping station is designed to operate at low water levels, but the situation requires increased caution.
- The working group, established back in July, is continuously monitoring the facilities to ensure the safety of the national energy system.
The Ministry emphasizes that the safety of nuclear power facilities remains a priority. The plant's teams are working around the clock to optimize the operation of the pumps and cooling systems under the current difficult conditions.
