The new border control system EES (Entry/Exit System) began to be introduced gradually in Bulgaria from October 12, 2025, and completely changes the procedures for crossing the borders for foreign citizens who are not members of the EU or the Schengen area.
How EES works
The EES system is fully automated and digitized, replacing the stamps in passports: now all entries and exits of citizens of third countries will be recorded in the electronic database of the EU. When crossing the Bulgarian border, the traveler is obliged to provide biometric data: fingerprints and a photo of the face, as well as data from the passport. Children under 12 are photographed only. Information on temporary refusals of entry is also recorded in the system.
Phased introduction in Bulgaria
From October 12, 2025, EES is already working at all air and sea border crossings in Bulgaria, and the introduction has started at the Kalotina crossing (border with Serbia) on land borders. By the beginning of 2026, EES will cover all land borders of Bulgaria.
What does this mean for Bulgaria
Bulgaria has joined the Schengen area (by air, sea and land), so the use of EES for short-term travel has become mandatory for all foreign citizens who enter the country without a long-term visa. EES ensures an accurate count of days of stay (maximum 90 days in any 180-day period) and prevents abuses of the visa regime or illegal stay.
In perspective, the introduction of EES in Bulgaria will facilitate control and increase border security, but travelers should be prepared for stricter document checks and possible delays, especially in the process of adapting to the new technological system.
Additionally: ETIAS
In parallel with the introduction of EES, the launch of the ETIAS system is expected in 2026 - an online permit for citizens from visa-free countries, which will also be relevant for travel to Bulgaria. The EES system is one of the main elements of the digitalization of the control of border crossings of the EU and Bulgaria, significantly changes the practice of border control and requires travelers to be ready to provide biometric data when entering and leaving the country.
