Modernization of port infrastructure in Varna

The "Maintenance of Sea Water Cleanliness" (MSWC-Varna) port terminal is launching a large-scale modernization, funded by the Transport Connectivity Program 2021-2027. The investment, worth 5,009,075.43 euros, is aimed at introducing environmentally friendly cargo handling technologies.

What does the project include?

The key element of the project is the purchase of a new zero-emission mobile crane. Here are its main technical specifications:

"The new equipment will increase the handling of intermodal units by 25% for bulk cargo and containers and by over 10% for road and sea transport," announced the Regional Information Center-Varna.

Environmental benefits and economic growth

Replacing the current diesel crane with an electric one will lead to a significant reduction in the carbon footprint and noise at the port site. In addition to a cleaner environment, the project aims to fully utilize the capacity for sea cargo.

In 2024, the port handled 1,201,778 tons of cargo, mainly grain crops. With the new equipment, the annual capacity is expected to reach over 3.3 million tons by 2049.

The project starts on April 1, 2026, and will be completed by June 1, 2028.
