A Historic Step for NATO Security
The Air Forces of Bulgaria, Romania, and Spain have officially signed a trilateral technical agreement that allows for cross-border Air Policing operations. This initiative is part of NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NATINAMDS).
This cooperation is a key mechanism for ensuring the security of Allies along the entire Eastern flank of the Alliance.
How does the joint mission work?
- Flexibility: Spanish fighter jets based in Romania will now be able to patrol in Bulgarian airspace as well.
- Collective defense: The missions aim to deepen interoperability between member states.
- Efficiency: The exchange of capabilities allows for a faster reaction when needed.
The future of Bulgarian aviation
The issue of airspace protection remains relevant until the arrival of the new F-16 Block 70s. At the moment, Bulgaria continues to use the MiG-29, with the Ministry of Defense actively seeking options to secure spare parts and interim platforms to maintain its operational readiness within the Alliance.
