Over a kilogram of contraband jewelry, cleverly hidden in an ordinary bucket of yogurt, was discovered by the officers of the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing point (BCP). This was announced by the competent authorities.
The gold jewelry, valued at an impressive sum of over 223 thousand leva, was found in an international bus that entered the country from neighboring Turkey. The incident raises questions about the ingenuity of smugglers and the constant efforts of customs officers to prevent the illegal transport of goods.
For the incident, which caused widespread public interest, Krasimir Chapkanov, holding the position of head of the Operational Unit of the Customs at BCP Kapitan Andreevo, reported in the program "The Day Begins".
"Made us open the bucket of yogurt because it was big, and also food products are prohibited from being imported into Bulgaria and Europe. And colorless bags with yellow metal were protruding from inside. After establishing the metal, it is understood that they are gold jewelry," Chapkanov shared in front of the camera. According to him, the customs officers suspected the large volume of the yogurt and the fact that the import of food products is restricted.
The gold, the object of smuggling, has been seized in favor of the state. A pre-trial investigation has been initiated in the case, and the offender has been released on bail in the amount of 2000 leva.
Chapkanov emphasized that gold jewelry has also been found in other, at first glance, ordinary objects, such as detergents and fabric softeners. He added that larger quantities of contraband goods are often hidden in specially built hiding places and in factory cavities of vehicles.
