President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen praised today the way in which Spain and Morocco handled the migrant crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, describing the authorities' response as "efficient and effective". At the same time, she called for a unified European approach built on the principle of solidarity.

In a letter sent to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, von der Leyen notes that she wants to specifically highlight the rapid return of individuals who entered Ceuta illegally from Moroccan territory, the Spanish newspaper "Pais" reports.

"The Spanish and Moroccan authorities handled this situation in an effective way, successfully preventing illegal crossing to the mainland of Spain and Europe," states the head of the European Commission in her letter.
