DPS legislative initiative for road safety

The Parliamentary Group of the "Movement for Rights and Freedoms" (DPS) has submitted a proposal to the National Assembly for a radical change in the Road Traffic Act. The deputies are proposing a total ban on individual electric vehicles, better known as electric scooters.

The sponsors point out that the current regulatory model is not working and does not guarantee the safety of citizens in public spaces.

Main motives for the ban

According to the sponsors, the objective impossibility of guaranteeing the safety of pedestrians necessitates the removal of the possibility for scooters to be driven on roads open to public use, as well as in parks and gardens.

Statistics of violations

Data from the Sofia Municipality confirm the seriousness of the problem. In the period from April 1 to May 22 of this year alone, joint teams of the Municipal Police and the Sofia Directorate of the Interior issued over 440 tickets for violations committed by electric scooter riders.
