Comprehensive renovation of Asparuhov Bridge in Varna is upcoming
The Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) and Varna Municipality are joining forces for a large-scale reconstruction of the Asparuhov Bridge. The project is a step forward following the finalization of a detailed technical report, which analyzed the condition, seismic resistance, and structural integrity of the facility.
"The technical report has been approved by the Expert Technical and Economic Council, which includes experts, representatives of the municipality, and civil organizations," the RIA stated.
What does the planned renovation include?
- Renewal of the road gauge and infrastructure;
- Construction of new bicycle lanes for more convenient travel;
- Replacement of railings and lighting;
- Reconstruction of the trolleybus network.
Project timelines and stages
The approval of the technical report gives the green light for the next stage – the preparation of specifications. The RIA plans for the design assignment to be ready by the end of 2026. The process will be implemented through close cooperation between the Agency and the local authorities, including the signing of a memorandum of understanding for joint construction and assembly activities.
Why is the Asparuhov Bridge key?
As part of road I-9 Varna – Burgas, the facility is a vital artery connecting the Asparuhovo district with the city center. The complex consists of 11 bridge structures, with the main bridge (#9) being a critical point for transport traffic in the region. After the completion of the documentation and coordination with the Municipality, the actual phase of the repair will begin.
