Sofia, July 15 (BTA) - The Chief State Health Inspector Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev reported a slight increase in COVID-19 incidence in Bulgaria but emphasized that the levels are significantly lower compared to last year. In an interview for the show "Hello, Bulgaria" on Nova TV, Assoc. Prof. Kunchev stated: "There is a slight increase in COVID-19 incidence, but it is tenfold decreased compared to last year, so there is no situation that concerns us."
The expert explained that the weekly increase in cases is not unusual and should not be viewed in isolation. He emphasized the variable nature of the virus and the emergence of new variants that spread more easily in the absence of strong collective immunity. Assoc. Prof. Kunchev noted that new variants usually do not cause severe illness, with most infected people recovering without the need for medical intervention.
Summer viruses and immunity
Regarding summer viruses, Assoc. Prof. Kunchev explained that they represent a diverse group of diseases that often present with mild symptoms. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the body's water-electrolyte balance during illness, especially in children who are more prone to rapid dehydration.
The expert also addressed the topic of immunity, warning against speculations about boosting it. "Immunity is a delicate system. I would rather focus on overall good health", said Assoc. Prof. Kunchev, recommending a balanced diet with sufficient protein instead of dietary supplements.
Climate change and mosquito-borne diseases
Assoc. Prof. Kunchev commented on the impact of climate change on the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. He emphasized the need for more effective and timely measures for insect control, including improving the quality of used products and installing window screens in infectious disease wards.
Regarding the chikungunya virus, Assoc. Prof. Kunchev reassured that there is no immediate danger for Bulgaria. However, he noted that results are expected from the World Health Organization regarding the Chinese variant of the virus and its potential higher infectiousness.
In conclusion, Assoc. Prof. Kunchev called for vigilance but assured that health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are ready to respond if necessary. He emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and responsible behavior in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
