Outside the cash registers of the Bulgarian National Bank as of February 16, 4.8 billion leva in banknotes and coins remain, which represents 84.5 percent of the leva withdrawn that were in circulation at the beginning of 2025, the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) reports on its website.
The process of withdrawing banknotes and coins in leva and putting euro banknotes and euro coins into circulation is carried out in accordance with the current regulatory framework and the approved operational plans, the central bank notes.
As of the same date, euro banknotes and euro coins with a total value of over 7.2 billion euros have been put into circulation, ensuring the normal functioning of the payment system and the servicing of the economy and the population.
From February 1, 2026, the euro is the only legal tender in the Republic of Bulgaria, the BNB reminds.
As of February 6, 2026, the euro banknotes and euro coins put into circulation in our country were with a total value of over 6.7 billion euros, and the withdrawn leva were 81 percent compared to the beginning of 2025.
Citizens can exchange leva at commercial banks and branches of "Bulgarian Posts" until the end of 2026, and until the middle of the year the service will be performed without fees. The exchange of leva at the BNB will be carried out without fees indefinitely.
