BNB to Mint 218 Million Euro Coins in 2026 and Increase Management Salaries

The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) plans to mint 218 million euro coins in 2026 as part of the preparations for joining the Eurozone. In addition, the BNB anticipates an increase in management salaries and is increasing personnel expenses. Overall expenses for the central bank are decreasing, despite planned investments in information systems and construction.

The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) plans to mint 218 million circulating euro coins in 2026 to serve the cash circulation, according to the BNB Budget for 2026. This quantity includes 1 million commemorative euro coins with a face value of 2 euros.

The planned expenses for the production of new euro coins amount to 43.9 million euros, which is a decrease of 47.7% compared to 2025. Of this amount, 6.5 million euros are for commemorative coins.

The expenses for circulating euro coins are 37.4 million euros, a decrease of 32.9% compared to 2025. The total expenses for cash circulation are 49.937 million euros, which is 28% of the total expenses of the BNB and is a decrease compared to 2025.

The BNB also plans expenses for new banknotes in the amount of 511,000 euros (a decrease of 91.2%) and 78,000 euros for designing new coin issues. The expenses for the destruction of banknotes and coins amount to 1.467 million euros (an increase).

The total operating expenses of the BNB for 2026 are 178.49 million euros (a decrease of 5.1%), despite the increases in personnel and external services expenses. The expenses for participation in the ESCB amount to 13.193 million euros (an increase).

The BNB's investment program for 2026 is 89.9 million euros, with 58.9 million euros for construction. Investments in information systems are 22.431 million euros.

Personnel expenses increase to 50.669 million euros (28.4% of the total expenses). The salaries of the management increase: the Governor will receive 15,726 euros monthly, the Deputy Governors - 13,480 euros each, and the other members of the Management Board - 4493 euros each. The average monthly salaries by personnel groups will reach: management personnel - 6383 euros, specialists - 3107 euros, and support staff - 1770 euros.

The budget for 2026 is prepared to ensure the activity of the BNB in the Eurozone and is financed with its own resources.
