A significant technological breakthrough was officially announced in July 2025 - the Bulgarian supercomputer complex "Discoverer" received a substantial expansion of computational capacity. An investment of approximately 15 million euros, co-financed by national and European funds, allowed a qualitative leap in the capabilities of the research infrastructure.
The installation, implemented by technology giant HP, is positioned in the heart of the Bulgarian scientific epicenter - the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies at BAS. The new configuration promises multidisciplinary application, covering critical research areas such as biomedicine, machine learning, climate modeling, and artificial intelligence.
Experts from the institution emphasize that the achieved 3 petaflops of computational power place Bulgaria among the leading European countries in terms of supercomputer capabilities. The machine will be accessible through a specialized online portal, primarily serving the academic community, industrial partners, and medical researchers.
Complex scientific simulations, large-scale data analysis, and medical visualizations are among the main expected applications. Full commissioning is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, after conducting in-depth test procedures.
