Digitalization of oncology care in Bulgaria

The Ministry of Health (MH) has launched the creation of a national information database for patients with malignant diseases. The project represents a large-scale modernization of the existing cancer registry.

The new system will consolidate data on over 120 medical indicators, compared to just 28 until now, ensuring compliance with European standards for health data.

What information will be collected?

Data will be submitted electronically by oncology committees and medical institutions directly to the National Health Information System (NHIS). It is important to note that the registry will not be public, and the protection of personal data is guaranteed. Patients will be able to view their own information through their electronic health record.

The goal of the reform is to optimize health policies and distribute resources more effectively, enabling Bulgaria to participate fully in the European Cancer Information System.
