The Appellate Court has modified the remand measure for the truck driver
The Appellate Court in Burgas has decided to place the 56-year-old driver, accused of the serious truck accident near Karnobat, under house arrest with electronic monitoring. The panel of judges overturned the ruling of the first instance, which had initially ordered permanent detention.
The incident occurred on July 10, when a truck crossed the median barrier of the "Trakia" motorway, entered oncoming traffic, and struck two passenger cars. As a result of the collision, one person died and two were injured.
Versions of the defense and the prosecution
- The defendant's lawyer: Borislav Yankov stated that the automotive expert report is not yet ready. According to him, the truck tires were not worn out, supporting the version of a sudden blowout due to high temperatures.
- The prosecution: Burgas District Prosecutor Georgi Chinev pointed out that the blown-out tire theory can only be confirmed by an expert report, which is complex and requires time.
Chinev also commented on the state of the road infrastructure, noting that the safety facilities on the "Trakia" motorway failed to fulfill their function of stopping the heavy vehicle, which raises questions about road safety measures in the country.
