Remaining at liberty: Varna District Court does not change the driver's measure

The Varna District Court has decided to maintain the "signature" (undertaking to remain at a fixed address) as a precautionary measure for the 53-year-old driver who killed two women on a sidewalk in Varna at the end of last year. Despite the insistence of private prosecutors and the prosecution for a stricter measure, the court concluded that at this moment there are no grounds for detention in custody.

"If we assume that this person had an epileptic seizure, he is out there and remains dangerous to people," said lawyer Georgi Radkov, representing the victims' families.

Details surrounding the incident and the investigation

The tragedy unfolded on December 22, when two women, aged 53 and 79, lost their lives. The investigation revealed critical facts regarding the driver's health condition:

At this moment, the driver has been charged with causing a traffic accident under conditions of conscious negligence.

Procedural obstacles and next steps

The case experienced a delay after the court returned the indictment to the prosecution due to procedural violations in the description of the charges. The victims' relatives expressed their dissatisfaction with the court's decision and their concerns that the accused might abscond. Hearings are expected to continue at the end of September, when witnesses will be heard.
