Every year on June 14, World Blood Donor Day is observed, dedicated to promoting the noble cause of blood donation. The day was declared a global initiative by the World Health Organization in 2004, and the date was not chosen randomly - it coincides with the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the Nobel Prize laureate for the discovery of the ABO blood group system.
On the eve of the holiday, the Minister of Health, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Silvi Kirillov, MD, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to all voluntary blood donors, who, with their humane gesture, donate not just blood, but hope and life to patients in hospitals. "You are the people who respond - quietly, but with the power of compassion," the Minister stated.
The motto of World Blood Donor Day - "Give blood, give hope: together we save lives" - embodies the spirit of solidarity and unites countries around the world in the effort to raise awareness about the immense need and importance of blood and blood product donation for those in need.
Over 192 countries have joined the initiative, and anyone who wishes to become a blood donor can find useful information on the website of the National Center for Transfusion Hematology. The call is to continue to be active and to attract new like-minded individuals to the noble mission of blood donation.
