The Ministers of Internal Affairs of Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey held a key meeting in Sofia, discussing strategies to counter illegal migration and strengthen regional security through trilateral cooperation.

On June 24, 2025, an important international meeting was held in the capital of Bulgaria, bringing together high-ranking representatives from three countries to conduct a comprehensive analysis of migration processes. The forum was the second in a series after the initial meeting held in Istanbul in January of the same year.

The participants - Ministers Daniel Mitov (Bulgaria), Mavrudis Voridis (Greece), and Ali Yerlikaya (Turkey) - outlined the massive challenges to regional security arising from growing migration flows. They emphasized the need for coordinated actions to effectively manage migration processes.

The discussion focused on several key areas: border management, prevention of illegal migration, partnership with countries of origin of migrant groups, and developing effective return mechanisms.

Bulgarian Minister Daniel Mitov emphasized the strategic importance of the trilateral format. He presented the national position, highlighting the invested resources and achieved results in countering illegal migration processes.

Greek Minister Mavrudis Voridis shared the challenges faced by his country related to illegal arrivals. He declared a determination for a more restrictive migration policy and building an effective system for returning migrants.

Turkish representative Ali Yerlikaya underscored significant progress in stopping illegal migration flows. He noted that the trilateral mechanism had substantially contributed to transforming Turkey from a transit to a secure country.

The ministers unanimously united around the understanding that effective migration management requires open dialogue, coordinated efforts, and respect for national security. They confirmed their intention to continue regular meetings and deepen professional cooperation.

Among the key points was the need for joint actions against criminal networks involved in human smuggling. Participants emphasized that this type of organized crime is directly linked to terrorist threats and requires a comprehensive international response.

As a result of the meeting, a principled agreement was reached to deepen information exchange, harmonize border policies, and develop joint operational strategies to counter illegal migration.

The final communiqué reaffirmed the determination of the three countries to continue dialogue and work synchronously in the name of regional security and stability.
