The anniversary of the death of Hristo Botev was marked with a solemn ceremony in Nessebar. The event began with the harrowing sound of sirens and continued with recitals by students who paid tribute to the great Bulgarian poet and writer. The local residents bowed to the heroic deeds and self-sacrifice of the heroes who contributed to the freedom of Bulgaria.
The day of Botev and of those who died for independence is celebrated every year on June 2, the date of the revolutionary's death in 1876. Initially observed in Vratsa and Plovdiv, this holiday was given official status in 1901, when Botev's detachment was present at the peak of Vola (Okolchitsa). Since 1948, a one-minute silence is observed throughout the country at 12:00 on this day.
The ceremony in Nessebar was part of the tradition of honoring the heroes who contributed to the freedom of Bulgaria. The local folklore ensemble already has a prestigious award from an international festival in Turkey, proving the high level of cultural heritage in the city.
