The chairperson of the Consumer Protection Commission, Maria Filipova, announced a detailed plan to counteract any potential speculation in commercial establishments after the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria from January 1, 2026. The Commission will conduct inspections of high-risk establishments and impose fines of up to 50,000 leva for each violation.

Chairwoman of the Consumer Protection Commission Maria Filipova exclusively visited "Dariknews.bg" to explain the measures that will be taken to counter any potential speculation in commercial establishments after the introduction of the euro in Bulgaria on January 1, 2026. The National Revenue Agency (NRA), the Commission for Protection of Competition (CPC) and the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) have signed a cooperation agreement that guarantees enhanced joint control over the entire process of introducing the single European currency.

Filipova explained that inspections will be carried out throughout the country, first visiting the highest-risk establishments, and then repeating the inspections. She stressed that the Law on Introduction of the Euro provides for coercive administrative measures to correct unfair behavior by merchants in the initial phase. Filipova stated that she can order the merchant to restore the previous price when there is an unjustified increase.

The CPC Chairwoman called on anyone who becomes a victim of speculation to contact the Commission. She informed that there is a telephone line, a mobile application, and an upcoming website that will allow citizens to report violations. Filipova stressed that the Law obliges her to impose sanctions of up to 50,000 levs for each violation, and they rely not only on signals from citizens but also on their own inspections for prevention.

Filipova warned that the highest risk of unjustified price increases is in commercial establishments providing access to essential products such as food and water. She also informed about a high number of cases of the spread of false information on the topic on social networks.

In conclusion, Filipova explained that during the first month of the introduction of the euro (January 2026), payments can be made in both currencies, with the merchant returning only in euros. After the expiration of this first month, payments in stores will be made only in euros.
