Prof. Georgi Angelov, Deputy Minister of Innovation and Growth, commented on the importance of spinoffs - projects that transform research results into innovative business solutions. He pointed out that such initiatives encourage the exchange of knowledge, expand expertise, and facilitate the transfer of technologies from academia to business.
During a panel discussion at the Spinoff Conference 2025 at the GATE Institute, Prof. Angelov discussed the progress in Europe's technological independence in the field of microelectronics and how Bulgaria can strengthen its participation in this process. He gave an example of the project for a National Competence Center in the field of integrated circuits, which was launched at the end of May 2025. The Center aims to strengthen expertise and increase capacity in microelectronics along the entire supply chain - from design to production, assembly, testing, and packaging.
The Deputy Minister stressed that there are currently two conflicting trends - a growing demand for semiconductor chips, but a declining interest of students in engineering and STEM. Initiatives such as the creation of competence centers in Europe address this problem by providing career development opportunities for young people in the field of high technologies.
The Spinoff Conference 2025 event brought together innovators, policymakers, scientists, and entrepreneurs from the country and abroad to discuss the digital, green, and AI-driven transformation in Europe.
