President Volodymyr Zelenskyy initiated a large-scale evacuation mission, which on June 24, 2025 successfully evacuated 31 Ukrainian citizens from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The operation is part of a broader repatriation plan, during which a total of 164 people were returned from Iran and Israel.
The evacuation process proceeded extremely precisely and was pre-planned. The Ukrainian diplomatic representation in Tehran timely informed its citizens and organized a gathering point at the embassy. The group was transported by bus to the Iranian-Azerbaijani border, where they undertook a risky pedestrian crossing over a bridge across the Aras River, carrying children and personal luggage.
A significant obstacle were the Iranian authorities, who traditionally impede the free departure from their territory by citizens, including foreign nationals. Despite the challenges, the group successfully passed border control and was met by Azerbaijani services.
The governments of Azerbaijan, Moldova, and Egypt played a key role in the operation, providing air transit to Chisinau and a subsequent bus route to Kyiv. One of the evacuated women shared an emotional story: "My daughter was born in Ukraine, and my son has never set foot in his homeland, but both speak Ukrainian, wear embroidered shirts, and love traditional dishes".
The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense officially expressed gratitude to all participants in the operation. Special recognition was extended to Ambassadors Yuriy Husiev and Yevhen Korniichuk, the governments of Azerbaijan, Moldova, and Egypt, as well as to SkyUp airline for logistical assistance.
