The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria comments on the content of the report of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) of the European Parliament on the progress of the Republic of North Macedonia (RNM). The Bulgarian side takes note of the report, but expresses concerns regarding issues related to the rights of the Bulgarian minority and provocations against Bulgarian citizens.

In response to media inquiries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria expresses its position on the report of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) on the progress of the Republic of North Macedonia (RNM). The Bulgarian institution takes note of the content of the report, including the assessments and findings on the state of European integration of the RNM. The Ministry welcomes the determination of AFET not to allow involvement in speculative nationalist narratives related to claims of "centuries-old Macedonian identity", which contradict European values and offend the feelings of Bulgarians and other communities in the RNM.

Bulgaria consistently states that it has no objections to the contemporary "modern" perceptions of identity, as this is a matter of personal choice. The Bulgarian side expresses regret that the manipulative interpretation of this position by the authorities in Skopje often serves as a justification for the non-fulfillment of the undertaken commitments, which is one of the reasons for the delay in the process of European integration of the RNM.

Bulgaria's main concerns are related to guaranteeing the right of Bulgarians in the RNM to self-determination, without fear of persecution and discrimination, as well as preventing provocations against millions of Bulgarian citizens - descendants of Bulgarians from the geographical region of Macedonia.

Bulgaria remains committed to all elements of the European Consensus of 2022, the implementation of which is the only opportunity for the European integration of our southwestern neighbor. This position is categorically confirmed by the decisions of the National Assembly of June 2022 and May 2025.
