Every Bulgarian school will get a free first aid poster called "I Help Because I Know". The publishing group Prosveta and the association Academy First Aid are giving the posters away, the two organisations said.

The posters are already on their way to schools across Bulgaria.

The aim is to teach pupils skills that can save a life. The poster sets out the basic rules of first aid, explained clearly and illustrated with colour drawings.

It shows what to do when someone faints, gets burned, bleeds heavily or chokes. It also says when a child should look for an adult and when to call the emergency number 112.

Teachers can use it in lessons on "Man and Nature" and "Biology and Health Education", and in other classes on health and safety. It is meant to hang in a visible place, in the classroom or the school corridor.

The publisher says a quick and correct response to an accident can decide whether a person survives, so pupils need to know what to do. The poster will remind them what to do in a crisis.

Kina Andreeva, editor-in-chief at Prosveta, said children learn at school how to react, including when someone needs first aid. To turn this knowledge into skills, she said, they have to recall and practise it.

Andreeva explained the idea behind the poster: "That is exactly the idea of the poster 'I Help Because I Know' – to keep the important information in front of pupils' eyes all the time." She said this will help children remember the rules more easily and react correctly.
