The agricultural sector in Bulgaria marks a significant increase in producer prices during the second quarter of 2025, according to the latest report from the National Statistical Institute (NSI). The overall producer price index in agriculture has risen by an impressive 15.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.
NSI experts report that this increase is the result of the combined effect of growth in two key sub-sectors: crop production, where prices have increased by 26.7%, and animal husbandry, which recorded a growth of 5.8%.
When analyzing on an annual basis, there is a general trend of increasing agricultural product prices by 13.5%. Crop production again leads with a 25.5% increase, while animal husbandry reports a more modest but still positive growth of 2.9%.
Dramatic increase in fresh fruit prices
Particularly noteworthy is the dramatic increase in fresh fruit prices, which have risen by 120.6% compared to the second quarter of 2024. This spike is mainly due to the significant price increase of cherries (140.7%) and apricots (113.4%). Experts attribute this phenomenon to probable climatic factors and changes in market demand.
Cereal crops also record a growth of 5.8%, with grain corn leading with an increase of 14.7%. Industrial crops are not far behind, with an overall increase of 10%, driven by rapeseed (24.6%) and sunflower (11.2%).
Dynamics in the livestock sector
An interesting dynamic is observed in the livestock sector. Although live animal prices slightly decrease by 0.2%, animal products record a significant increase of 14.4%. Cow's milk and chicken eggs lead with growth of 16% and 19.8% respectively.
It is interesting to note that the price index of products and services for current consumption in agriculture marks a slight decrease of 0.4% compared to the same quarter of 2024. This shows that despite the overall increase in producer prices, production costs remain relatively stable.
There is an increase in the prices of veterinary medical products (4.7%), sowing and planting materials (4.3%), as well as feed (2.1%). On the other hand, electricity and fuel prices have decreased by 7.6%, which may positively affect overall production costs in the sector.
