On this date, June 18, 1876, in the locality of Chereshovo dyrvo, near Vratsa, the last major battle of Hristo Botev's detachment takes place. After the death of the voivode on May 20 according to the old style (June 2 according to the new style), the surviving detachment members, led by Nikola Voinovski and Georgi Apostolov, continue their struggle in the mountains.
The battle at Chereshovo dyrvo marks the end of the active actions of Botev's detachment. Exhausted, without ammunition and food, the detachment members engage in a fierce clash with a numerous Ottoman pursuit. Many of them perish, and others are captured and later sentenced to death or exile.
This episode from history often remains in the shadows, but it occupies an important place in the national memory. The heroism of the remaining living detachment members is an example of self-sacrifice and steadfastness in the pursuit of freedom.
